A valley of superlatives

I remember well my first visit to Wasdale. Five days of camping with wall to wall sunshine, an ascent of the highest mountain in England, a paddle in the deepest lake and a drink in the pub where for many years the biggest liar was in residence. It was a wonderful introduction to that valley of superlatives.

However, to really know Wasdale one has to experience all its moods; it’s not enough to sit beside Wast Water on a warm summer evening as the crags of Scafell Pike turn pink. No, the tantrums must be endured too, and during these periods of petulance the light chaser must exercise patience and often come away empty handed, but sometimes…
